Legend Drug

A

any drug required by state law or regulation to be dispensed on prescription only or is restricted to use by practitioners only

Nonlegend or nonprescription drug

A

any drugs that may be lawfully sold without a prescription

Controlled substance

A

a drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession and use are regulated by a government. “Scheduled drugs” within the act are those categorized depending on their abuse potential, mental and physical dependence, and medical use.

A

1st set is mfg ID, 2nd set is drug ID, 3rd set is pkg size

A

series of numbers assigned to practitioner allowing him/her to write prescriptions for controlled substances. Also assigned to pharmacies/other facilities who stock controlled substances

A

National provider identifier, unique to covered health care provider, mandated by HIPAA.

NPI vs DEA numbers

A

All covered health care providers can get an NPI, where only those who can prescribe controlled substances get a DEA number.

Wholesaler/distributor

A

corporation, individual, or other entity which buys drugs or devices for resale and distribution to corporations, individuals or entities other than consumers. Allows pharmacies to buy all or most goods from them, as opposed to individual manufacturers for each product. Examples: Cardinal, AmerisourceBergen, McKesson
