A

Self-deprecation is useful for people of high status who want to create a sense of equality with the audience. The audience responses very positively to this. But the audience views self-deprecation as attention seeking of self loathing when a person of lower status does this.

Q

Do first impressions count? Explain two studies that say they do.

A

Yes. A thin slices study on doctors where a participant is shown 30 sec clip on doctor interacting with patient and judges whether or not they like them can predict the likelihood of the doctor getting sued. Similarly, the first 30 seconds of a teacher teaching can predict the likeability of that teacher at the end of the semester.
