Q

in what ways were the lives of young people affected by Nazi policies in the 1930s

A

Hitler aimed to control all aspects of the lives of young people in order to brainwash them into idolising him and the the Nazis

  1. Education

Children indoctrinated in schools
More PE -> creating soldiers and mothers
Subjects changed to reflect Nazi beliefs - eugenics (race studies)
Children were taught that they were superior to other races -> more tolerant of discrimination in the years to come

  1. Extracurricular activities

Hitler Youth -> boys attended meetings and camps, learnt military skills, training to be soldiers
League of German Girls -> motherhood/cooking, training to be traditional mothers
Not everyone supported it -> Swing Youth, rebelled, had parties, smoked and listened to jazz, arrested/killed

  1. Conclusion (How did it change over time, was everyone affected equally?)

Influence on children’s lives increased over time -> Hitler Youth became compulsory in 1939, other youth groups banned 1933
