Earth was formed by a mix of hot gases and solids and had almost no atomosphere. The surface was molten and as it cooled, an atmosphere of gases from volcanos formed. It was made up mainly of hydrogen sulfide, methane and carbon dioxide.

The earth’s surface was mostly covered by a huge ocean. It contained small organic molecules called prebiotics, because they were there before life appeared.
