through the power of the
Holy Spirit
• Mary has a choice (free
will)
• Gabriel’s message is for ALL
believers

Simillarities and differences in annunciation
Similarities Mary was a virgin An angel announced Jesus’
birth
Jesus was conceived by the
power of the holy spirit
God worked through humans
enable his plan for humanity
to come about
Differences
Angel Gabriel appears to
Mary (in Luke) & to Joseph
(in Matthew)
To Mary, Gabriel appears in
person– to Joseph he
appears in a dream
In Luke he is named Jesus, in
Matthew he is named
Emmanuel
Joseph did not question the
role he had to play
Titles of jesus-word of god
• The Word (Jesus) is eternal
• The Word of God is God - God’s self expression
• The Word and God are united yet distinct
• The Word of God gives life, light and guidance
‘…and the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have
seen his glory….full of grace and truth.’
(John 1:14)
Grace = love … so Jesus is an expression of God’s love for humans
Titles of jesus-son of man
• Jesus called himself this when referring to his future
suffering
• It emphasises that he was fully human
“Jesus began to teach that the son kf the man must undergo great suffering”-mark 8:31
Christians believe Jesus was fully human, as he lived a complete
human life filled with human experiences and emotions. Jesus’ human
nature is emphasised in the phrase ‘the Son of Man, which he sometimes
used to talk about himself. This phrase has two different meanings. It can
be used:
• as a general title that any person might use to refer to themselves;
in this sense, it is a title that just refers to a normal human being
• as a title for someone who has been given power and authority
by God.
Jesus used this phrase when he talked about the suffering he would
have to endure during his crucifixion.
Titles of jesus-son of God
• At Jesus’ trial by the Sanhedrin he was asked ‘Are
you the Son of God?’
• Jesus replied ‘I am’
• This shows that he was also fully God
• During his life on earth he limited himself to the
human condition
• When Jesus was arrested and brought before the Jewish Council,
the high priest asked Jesus ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the
Blessed One?’ (Mark 14:61 (NRSV)).
• Jesus replied by saying 1 am. He acknowledged he was the Son
• Jesus then went on to say’you will see the Son of Man seated at
the right hand of the Power’ (Mark 14:62 (NRSV)). Here, Jesus used
the title ‘Son of Man’ to emphasise his humanity, but he als
The ICHTHUS
• Greek word ‘ICHTHUS’ meaning ‘fish.’
• It is also an acronym:
I – Iesous (Jesus)
CH – Christos (Christ)
TH – Theou (of God)
U – Uios (Son)
S – Soter (Saviour)
Alpha and omega
• Alpha (A) is the first letter of
the Greek alphabet
• Omega is the last letter
It shows that:
• God is involved in everything from beginning to end
• It is on the Paschal candle and represents the risen Christ
Chi-Rho
• The first two letters of
the Greek word for
Christ (capitals)
• X and P
• Reminder of Jesus’ death…that he was sent by
God to save humans
• Inspires Christians to follow Jesus’ teachings
Christ the redeemer, scared heart and crucifix
- God’s continuous love for all
2 Jesus’ love and obedience in death - Flames from the heart symbolise Jesus’
burning love for all - Jesus shows his peace and love
1.Through his death Jesus freed us from
sin and death and reminds of jesus suffering that he went through for us
2. The love of God was poured out in
Jesus
Catholics attitudes to religious art
• Statues of Jesus help us focus on his qualities, his life and
helps us pray
• Note: the statue itself is not being worshipped
• Jesus was fully human
• Jesus can be shown as any ethnicity – all people were saved
-some christians belive that a statue of jesus can help people to concentrate on aspetcs of jesus teachings and life so it can inspire us to be more like jesus
-guves us a better understanding of what jesus might of felt so we can feel the same pain and love as him
-it can guve people hope and courage if ever down as brungs closer to God
Jesus was fully human-This makes it acceptable to show Jesus in a human form. Although no one knows what Jesus looked like, the Bible teaches that he was a man
Jesus was fully God-This makes it acceptable to show God in a human form. Because God revealed himself
on earth in the form of a human, it is fine to depict him in that form.
Jesus died to save all humanity-This means Jesus can be shown as a member of any ethnicity, because all people in the world were affected by his death and resurrection
Contrasting views to religious arts
• It goes against the second commandment ‘do not worship idols’
– this is the view of Jews
• People may think the statue itself is being worshipped
• We cannot portray an infinite God accurately. Some christians think its therefore wrong to hse humanity of jesus as a basis for any depiction,as it could destroy people understanding of divinity of jesus
• Art can be misleading– we do not know what Jesus looked like so wrong to depic him in a physical way
• Jesus was a human – not stone or wood…. So the proper way
to worship is to serve others
Moral teachings of jesus
Sermon on the Mount
A sermon (talk) Jesus gave to
teach people how to please God
(Matthew 5-7)
Beatitudes:
A list of eight kinds of people
who are blessed (made holy) in
God’s eyes.
‘I have not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it’
(Matthew 5:17)
• Jesus developed the Jewish laws to make them
more perfect
• The Old Testament law focused on actions people
should or shouldn’t do
• Jesus taught that people’s attitudes are more
important – this will please God
10 commandments
Jesus’ two great commandments
Sermon on mount-moses teaching and jesus teaching
Do not commit adultery-even looking at a person lustfully is wrong
Do not commit murder-do not get angry with someone or insult them
An eye an eye-do not take revenge
The beatitudes
Jesus blesses certain attitudes and says how people will be
rewarded:
Blessed are:
1. The poor in spirit (humble)
2. Those who mourn (sorrowful, bereaved)
3. The meek (not pushy or arrogant)
4. Those who hunger to do God’s will
5. The merciful (show compassion, love, forgiveness)
6. The pure in heart (unselfish)
7. The peacemakers (try to solve conflict)
8. Those who are persecuted (for a righteous (right) cause)
Each blessing comes with a reward…
‘Blessed are the
meek, for they will
inherit the earth’
‘Blessed are the pure in
heart for they will see God’
‘Blessed are the
merciful, for they
will receive mercy’
-Christians believe that Jesus ‘fulfilled’ the law. This means that he generally folloowed the law, but also he developed the law to make it more perfect
-Jesus taught that it is more important to focus on people’s attitudes. If people should have a loving right attitude, then they will do the right thing
The Beatitudes are a series of statements in which Jesus blessed certain attitudes or approaches
to living, and said how people with those attitudes would be rewarded.

What is grace
• God’s love …
• Gives us the strength to do
what God wants
• Pours out from the Trinity
into our hearts
• Brings us closer to God
is the love that unites
the three Persons of
the Trinity
helps people to
become aware of what
God wants for them
pours out from the
Trinity and gives
life to all things
gives believers the
strength to do
what God wants
pours into people’s
hearts and calls them
to a deeper relationship
with God
is a free a n d
unconditional gift
of love from God
The 7 sacraments and grace
• A sacrament is a moment of grace when God’s love is
received fully
• Believed to sanctify (make holy) a person’s life
• Thus it deepens our relationship with God
Sacrament: “An outward sign
of an inward grace’
What are the 7 sacraments
Eucharist
(Communion)
Reconciliation
(confession) Marriage
Baptism Ordination Confirmation Sacrament of the
sick
Sacraments and the incarnation
“I will be with you
always, until the
end of the age
Before the Incarnation, God was seen as a distant being
When Jesus left the earth he left us visible, tangible
signs of God’s presence– the sacraments
The sacraments make God present for ALL TIME
Imagi dei and abortion
• Humans are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)
• So, all life is sacred and should be protected because
it comes from God
• Catholics believe life begins at conception…that the
whole person is present ….
‘As soon as I heard your greeting,
the child in my womb leaped for joy’
(Elizabeth in Luke 1:44)
Contrasting views on abortion
-of mother’s life is at risk may actually risk her own life and childs life
-if womens gets raped and didn’t want the baby
-women should make yheir own choices for own body so can decide
-if there is substantial risk for child born it would suffer such as physical, mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped
The incarnation presnted in magisterium
• When the focus is too much on Jesus’ humanity it may
suggest that Jesus wasn’t really God; just a very good
person
• When the focus is too much on Jesus’ divinity (God), it
may suggest that Jesus only appeared to be human
• Two documents from the Catholic Church aim to create
the right balance of understanding:
Dei Verbum (Second Vatican Council)
Verbum Domini (letter from Pope Benedict)
Dei verbum 4 and verbum domini 12
He sent his Son…so he might tell
us of the innermost being of God’
God is revealed and speaks through Jesus
‘Jesus Christ, therefore, the word made flesh, wad sent as ‘aman to men’
Verbum domini 12-‘The eternal word became small enough
to fit into a manger….so that the word
could be grasped by us’
The Word (Jesus) limited himself to human
-The Word (or Son) of God limited himself to a human
form, so humans could come to understand God.
-Jesus always knew the will of God because he is God.
And he always carried out the will of God because
he is also the perfect human being.
-Through the very human act of dying, Jesus gave
himself into God’s hands. This led to his resurrection
and to his glorification as the Word of God.
St irenaeus writings
Irenaeus aims to show that the Incarnation brings God
and humans closer together…
He described Jesus as the meeting point between heaven
and earth (God and humans).
People can get to know God through Jesus, because he
displays the qualities of God.
The qualities thst humand value in jesus are also the qualities thst ar found in God. This means that humans can get a true understanding of nature of God through the life and cations lf Jesus. God is not hidden from humans.
Qualities appear in most people but difference is that in Jesus qualities are shown in purest form. Jesus is not only true God;truly humans, showing human qualities in perfect state
