What is a consumer?
A person who purchases goods and services for personal use.
Give 3 examples of services.
Servicing, garden maintenance, beutician, hairdressing, painting
Give 3 examples of products.
Food, electrical goods, clothes, car, books
Factors influence our shopping. Explain personal influence.
Personal likes and dislikes, making us unique.
Explain cultural influences.
Can influence choice of food, clothes etc.
Explain ethical influences.
If you are an ethical consumer, you are more likely to choose products that are local, Fairtrade or organic.
Explain economic influences.
Amount of money we have can influence the products and services we buy. if you don’t have the money, you can’t purchase.
Explain physiological influences.
This relates to our bodies and how they function eg. if you have a nut allergy you will be careful to choose the correct foods
Explain psychological influences.
Relate to our thoughts and feelings. Many people will only choose branded food products because of an emotional association with particular products even if they taste similar to supermarket own-brand goods.
Explain social influences.
Influnced by those around us and we may care about the opinions of friends and family. You may decide to buy a certain brand of trainers because your friends wear them.
Supermarket layout:
why are large bulk items place on pallets at entry of supermarket?
You are entering with an empty trolley, more spaceat start of shop, more likey to take advantage if it is an offer.
Why are barriers placed at the start?
Slows consumer down and you will see more items.
Why is hot air blowing as people enter the shop?
Makes customers feel better, improves their mood, makes them relax and enjoy the shopping experience, therfore more spending.
Where are special offers often situated?
At the end of aisles.
Why are treats and magazines placed at the till?
To encourage last minute impulse purchase.
Shops hypnotise into thinking ‘most costly is best’ by their phrasing and promotional language. What is often the case?
Often you won’t be able to tell the difference under the packaging.
What does the term ‘premium’ imply?
That it is a treat.

How are ‘own brand’ presented?
In a similar way to manufacturer’s brands but with the supermarkets
How do supermarkets suggest value in products?
Using names such as ‘basic’ or ‘savers’
Why should you not shop when you are hungry?
You will inevitably buy more.
How can using clubcard points/vouchers help?
They can reduce cost of shopping bill.
How can shopping in discount stores , such as Home Bargains help?
They often have great prices on brand items.
Which shelf has lower priced items?
Bottom shelf.
