What was the Colonial Office

A

first established in 1801, it was originally set up as part of the war office

it was divided up in 1870 to 5 departments

Causes of the Indian Mutiny

A

religion: the British failed to appreciate the complexities of the various religious groups which formulated India

Loaign touch: East India Company was losing touch with the pool it was ruling, particularly the Sepoys and those in the army

overconfidence of the East India Company : conquering a greater area of land meant a greater reliance on EIC resources EIC taxation made them unpopular, becoming administrators

Dalhousie Reforms: set up tea plantations which damaged traditional economies, encouraged ‘christianising missionaries’ and the ‘doctrine of Iapse’

What happened in the Indian Mutiny

A

began in Merut (Naval base) where Sepoys rose up and agianst their English officers and killed a number of them in May 1857

swiftly took control of many cities, including a short lived attempt at resurrecting the Mughal emperor

those who joined the Sepoys were discontent landowners, peasants who were against taxation

Cnpore Masacre 200 British women and children were killed

British enacted swift revenge, with 70,000 fresh soldiers armed with latest Colt revolver,

Brutal revenge to muslim mutineers, sewn to pigs skin and hung

Peace declared on 8th July 1858

What were the terms of the Government of India Act 1858

A

The EIC territories were passed to the rule of the Queen and EIC ceased to exist

Secretary of State for India was set up resumed the oles exercised by the EIC

an Indian Council was set up of 15 members, who would advise the SoSfI

The Crown appointed a Viceroy to replace the EIC Governor General

The Viceroy of India ruled with a legislative council

Provincial governors represented the Viceroy in the Provences and had their own legislative councils

proximately1000 British Civl Servants were working and heading up the Indian civil Service
