Indices/ algebra/ inequalities Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the multiplication law
x^a × x^b = x^(a+b)
What is the division law?
x^a ÷ x^b = x^(a-b)
What is the power law?
(x^a)^b = x^(a×b)
Zero power law
x^0 = 1
Negative power law:
x^(-a) = 1/x^a
Fraction powers: x^1/2=
Square root of x
Fraction powers: x^1/3=
Cube root of x
Simplify = ?
Collect like terms - eg: 3x + 2x = 5x
Expand brackets = ?
Multiple each term - eg: 2(x+3)= 2x + 6
Factorise = ?
Take out common factors - eg: 6x + 9 = 3(2x + 3)
What is rearranging?
Making a different letter the subject of formula.
What is substitution?
Plugging in values to solve for x or the unknown.
How do we solve an inequality?
We solve like a normal equation but if we divide by a negative sign, the sign flips.
What does it mean if there is an open circle to represent an inequality on a number line?
That x cannot be that number. x > 2 → open circle at 2.
What does it mean if there is a closed circle to represent an inequality on a number line?
That x could be the number. x <_4 → closed circle at 4
