Who was Hammurabi?
A diplomat who rose to power when Babylon was weak.He created the code of Hammurabi and realized that Elites and rulers don’t fight.
What was Hammurabi’s law code?
An eye for an eye, protect the women and children, Anti-vigilante (did not allow others to enforce law or punishment) Penalties were decided by the court, different penalties for different crimes and different social classes.
What was society like in Hammurabi’s Empire?
Stratified layers of society, Women had some rights like divorce but limited to prostitution or returning to her father after. Debt slavery was rampant and slaves were set apart from free citizens by being branded and shaved.
Societal changes during Hammurabi’s empire
Religious imperialism where the story of Tiamat vs Marduk told us of the earliest distinctions between male and female. This allowed men to deny women of the right to education, property, and political power.
