Industrial Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
Oxidation is …
A
- A loss of electrons
- Increased oxidation number
- Gaining of oxygen
- Loss of hydrogen
2
Q
Reduction is…
A
- Gain of electrons
- Decrease oxidation number
- Loss of oxygen
- Gain of hydrogen
3
Q
Electronegativity
A
Electronegativity is the strength with which atoms of an element attract electrons when they are chemically combined with another element.
4
Q
Oxidation Number Rules
A
- Flourine is always -1
- Group 1 metals are +1 in compounds
- Group 2 metals are +2 in a compound
- Oxygen is usually -2 in compounds
- Group 7 is usually -1 in compounds
5
Q
Reductant
A
- Donates electrons easily
- Reductant goes through oxidation
6
Q
Oxidant
A
- Accepts electrons easily
- Oxidant goes through reduction
7
Q
Electrolysis
A
The breakdown of an ionic compound in a molten or aqueous solution by the passage of electricity
8
Q
Why do we electroplate?
A
- Prevent against corrosion
- Improve shine
- Cheaper
9
Q
Extraction of Aluminium
A
- Purify the aluminum ore by crushing it with sodium hydroxide
- Aluminium needs to be molten however aluminium oxide melts at 2070 degrees, and is dissolved in cryolite
- Aluminium ions form on the negative electrode and Oxygen ions form on the positive electrode
- Aluminium ions gain electrons and are reduced to aluminium metal.
10
Q
Green Chemistry Principles
A
