Mechanical
Operated by a machine or machinery.
Rural
Relating to the countryside, rather than towns or cities.
Industrial
Economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories.
Urban
A characteristic of a town or city.
laissez faire
The idea that the government should only get involved in business to keep peace and protect property rights.
Transformer
A person or thing that fundamentally changes the essence of something or someone.
Infrastructure
Basic physical structures that allow something to function. Eg. roads, bridges.
Canal
A man-made waterway that allows for the passage of boats or ships inland, may also be used to move water for irrigation.
Union
A group of employees joining together to bring about change in a company by dealing with employers as a group.
Utilitarianism
The belief that anything that is done is ok as long as most of the people affected will benefit from it.
Craftsman
A person who is skilled in a particular craft, skill or art.
Communism
An economic and political system where all property and production belongs to the public.
Capitalism
An economic and political system by which a country’s industry and
trade are controlled by private owners that wish to make money.
Aqueduct
An artificial, man-made structure for conveying water.
Socialism
A system where the government owns and controls businesses and how goods are made and shared.
Proletariat
People who work for pay and don’t own much or have the tools to run their own big businesses.
Tenement
A small, separate living space in a building, usually poorly built and crowded.
Colonise
The sending of settlers to a location so that they take political control over it.
Empire
An extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch, or government.
Yield
To produce or provide a natural, agricultural, or industrial product.
Plough
A big farming tool with blades that is pulled over the soil to turn it and make rows for planting seeds.
