Industrial Systems (THEME 3) Flashcards
(19 cards)
Primary Sector?
Jobs involving the collecting or producing natural resources from the land or sea
- farming, mining and fishing.
Secondary Sector?
Jobs involving making and manufacturing goods
- house construction, builder, car manufacturer
Tertiary Sector?
Jobs involving providing a service for people
- teacher, waitress, doctor
Quaternary Sector?
Jobs involving advanced and high-tech.
- Medicinal research
Manufacturing industry?
Any industry that makes goods from raw materials, either through use of machines or by hand
Processing industry?
Its a type of manufacturing that involves specific stages of production in a sequence working towards a final product
Assembly industry?
An industry which involves different components being made in separate locations, not necessarily by the same company and then transported to and put together at a location
High-tech industry?
An industry using high tech/advanced methods and technology in the creation of a product. E.g. vaccinations, military tech.
Human factors affecting the location and type of industry?
Name at least 5
skilled labour Cheap labour available capital market supply network good housing good schools and hospitals nearby universities transport links good communication reliable electricity and water supply
Physical factors affecting the location and type of industry
name at least 5
flat land available land unpolluted land (greenfield site) natural transport links available raw materials renewable energy sources nice environments water supply climate
NIC
Newly Industrialised Country
Attractions for high-tech industries?
name at least 5
- attractive landscaped working environment
- cheap land prices
- proximity to other high-tech industries
- government incentives
- highly qualified and skilled workforce
- attractive location to live-shopping, cultural and entertainment facilities
- easy access to airports
- close to research facilities and universities
- good road links
Factors that affect the location of the industrial zone

- Raw material + input
Close to the Carey Island palm oil plantation which is where they get the FFB’s from to make the oil. - Nearby urban areas
Kuala Lumpur and Port Klang are close to the area which means there are nearby customers and transport links - E26 Road
Large road for easy transportation of FFB’s and to customers. FFB’s need to be transported quickly for the best production.
inputs

- FFBS (brought in using trucks) are used to make the crude oil.
- Capital
- Labour
process
west oil mill case study
- Grading process to remove ripe and unripe fruit bunches.
- Sterilization : The fruit is steam to soften and detach individual fruit from the bunch.
- Pressing: The individual fruits are pressed to extract the palm oil.
- Purification: Impurities are removed leaving crude palm oil
outputs

- Crude palm oil
- Unripe fruit bunches
- Empty bunches
- Shells
- Fibre
- Palm oil mill effluent (POME — liquid waste)
- Mulch (old stems leaves) organic fertiliser.

- Stripped bunches: These are used as fertilizer on the plantations.
- Fibre and Shells: used as boiler fuel in the mills
- POME: can be processed with a methane capture technique where the end result is biogas which can be used as energy. Pome is also treated at a wastewater treatment pond to reduce acidity.
positive impacts of industrial zones
west oil mill case study
- Has helped millions of people achieve economic independence
- Enabled people to have jobs (600,000 people)
- In 2011, a total of 4.917 million hectares were planted
- From 1960 to 2010, infant mortality rates have decreased drastically from about 70 per 1000 live births to around 10 because families were able to make money to provide for their families
negative impacts of industrial zones

- Dangerous work zones
- dense population
- Pollution
- Transportation of infrastructure
