What is the first line treatment for impetigo?
Topical fusidic acid
Oral flucloxacillin if severe (clarithromycin if allergic)
How long should children with impetigo be excluded from school for?
Until the lesions have crusted over and healed
48 hours after antibiotics
What is the shingles vaccine and who gets it?
A live attenuated sub cutaneous vaccine offered to all patients aged 70 = 79
What is the treatment for fungal nail infections?
Oral terbinafine or itraconazole (6 weeks - 3 months for fngernails and 3 - 6 months for toes)
What is erythrasma?
An asymptomatic flat slightly scaly pink or brown rash that is usually found in the groin or axillae. It is caused by an overgrowth of corynebacterium minitissmum
If you examine with a woods light you will see a coral red fluoresence
How do you treat erythrasma?
Topical miconazole or topical antibacterial
Oral erythromycin
What causes athletes foot?
trichophyton fungi
How do you treat athletes foot?
Topical imidazole or terbinafine
What is erythema multifrome?
A hypersensitivity rash that has a target appearance. It is most commonly triggered by infections with the most common being herpes simplex
What is the most common cause of tinea capitis?
Trichophytan tonsurans Microsporum canis (from cats or dogs)
What is the management of tinea capitis?
Oral antifungals (terbinifine) Topical ketoconazole
What is the most common cause of tinea corporis?
Trichophytan rubrum
How do you treat tinea corporis ?
oral fluconazole
What is the treatment for scabies?
Permethrin 5%
Malathion
What kind of hypersensitivity reaction causes the itch in scabies?
Type IV reaction to the mites/eggs which occurs 30 days after the initial infection
How long does the itch persist for in scabies?
4 - 6 weeks post eradication
Who gets crusted/norweigan scabies?
Patients wirh suppressed immunity such as HIV
How you you treat norweigan scabies?
Ivermectin
What causes pityriasis versicolour?
Mlassezia furfur
What is the treatment for pityriasis versicolour?
Topical antifungal such as ketoconazole shampoo
If extensive then oral itraconazole
What is eczema herpeticum?
Primary infection of the skin by herpes simplex 1 or 2. It is seen in children with atopic ecxema. Need to be admitted for IV acyclovir
What is necrotising fasciitis?
A rapidly spreading infection of the deep fascia with secondary tissue necrosis?
What is cellulitis?
Skin infection involving the deep subcutaneous tissue
What is erysipelas?
An acute superficical form of cellulitis that involves the dermis and upper subcutaneous tissue
