What’s PID?

A

Inflammatory disease of the organs of the female reproductive system. Usually a result of an ascending infection from the endocervix.

What organism do you have to cover for when suspecting PID?

A
  • Nisseria gonorrhoea and chlamydia trachomatis

- mycoplasma (genitalium + hominis)

How does PID present?

A
  • lower abdomen pain
  • deep dyspareunia
  • fever
  • abnormal vaginal discharge
  • dysuria
  • menstrual irregularities
  • cervical excitation
  • post insert of IUS or IUD

Q

How do you investigate and subsequently treat PID?

A
  • urine beta-HCG - rule out ectopic
  • high vaginal swabs (thrush, vaginosis, trachomonas)
  • gonorrhoea and chlamydia screen

-IM ceftriaxone + oral doxy + oral metronidazole for 14 days
