Infection Control Terminology Flashcards
(29 cards)
Hand washing
The single most important way to prevent the spread of infection
Pathogen
A disease causing microorganism
Standard Precautions
A method of infection prevention in which all blood, body fluids, non-intact skin ,and mucous membranes are treated as if they were infected with a disease
Transmission-based Precautions
A set of guidelines recommended by the CDC to prevent the spread of certain KNOWN or SUSPECTED infections that cannot be controlled by Standard Precautions
Droplet Precautions
A set of precautions used when drops of infected secretions can be put into the air by sneezing, coughing or even talking
Airborne Precautions
A set of precautions used when diseases are transmitted and float in the air after being expelled
Bloodborne Pathogens
Pathogen found in blood
Direct contact
A way transmit pathogens through touching an infected person or their secretions , body fluid or mucous membrane
Indirect contact
A way transmit pathogens through touching soothing contaminated by the infected person
Nosocomial infection
A hospital acquired infection either from contamination or the overgrowth of normal flora
Contamination
Exposure to a pathogen
Cross contamination
The spreading of disease or pathogens
Causative agent
A pathogen which is the source of an infection
Reservoir
The environment where a pathogen can grow and multiply
Portal of exit
The place where a pathogen can exit the reservoir
Mode of transmission
How a pathogen can be transported to a susceptible host
Portal of entry
A weak point where a pathogen can enter a new host
Susceptible host
A new reservoir for the pathogen to live after it has been transmitted
Non-intact skin
Skin that is broken by abrasions, cuts, rashes, acne ,pimples ,surgical incisions or boils
Biohazard waste
Any used item that is contaminated with blood ,body fluids ,secretions or excretions
Systemic infection
An infection which has traveled throughout the bloodstream
Chain of infection
The process of how a pathogen interacts with its environment to spread infection
Personal protective equipment
Equipment such as gloves, gowns and masks which protect the healthcare worker from serious exposure to illness resulting from contact with pathogens
Medical asepsis
The absence of infection or clean technique
