Infection Prevention and Control (Chapter 28) Flashcards
(23 cards)
Aerobic
Aerobic bacteria require oxygen for survival and multiplication sufficient to cause disease
Anaerobic
Anaerobic bacteria thrive where there is little or no free oxygen
Asepsis
The absence of pathogenic microorganisms
Asymptomatic
An illness is referred to as “asymptomatic” if the clinical signs and symptoms are not present
Bactericidal
A temperature or chemical that destroys bacteria is bactericidal
Bacteriostasis
State where bacteria grows and reproduces
Broad-spectrum antibiotics
Antibiotics which affect a large scope of microorganisms in the body; generally used to treat diseases of unknown etiology
Colonization
The presence and growth of microorganisms within a host but without tissue invasion or damage
Communicable disease
An infectious disease which can be transmitted directly from one person to another
Cough ettiquette
Covering of the mouth and/or nose when coughing or sneezing
Disinfection
Process that eliminates many or all microorganisms (with the exception of bacterial spores) from inanimate objects
Edema
Accumulation of fluid that appears as localized swelling
Endogenous infection
When a person’s naturally-occurring flora become altered and an overgrowth occurs
Epidemiology
The study of the causes and effects of disease
Exogenous infection
Infection stemming from the microorganisms found outside the individual (that are not normal floras)
Exudates
fluid and cells discharged from cells or blood vessels (pus or serum)
Granulation Tissue
Scar tissue from chronic inflammation
Hand hygiene
Alcohol antiseptic, soap-and-water handwashing or surgical scrub
Healthcare Associated Infections
Infections that result from delivery of health care delivery in a health care facility
Iatrogenic Infections
A type of healthcare associated infection; specifically, from a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure
Immunocompromised
Status of a patient with a compromised immune system
Infection
Invasion of a susceptible host by pathogens which cause disease
Leukocytosis
An increase in the circulating number of WBC’s
