A

Kissing bug.

Carries trypanosomes.

Spreads by defecating on host - faeces contain metacyclic trypomastigotes.

4
Q

Name 3 ways you can diagnose Trypanosomiasis.

A
  1. Identification of trypomastigotes on blood smear.
  2. Serology - best done 3w after infection, may need paired. Crossreacts with leash
  3. Histo on infected tissue (mainly heart muscle therefore mostly done PM)

16
Q

What infection can anaplasma phagocytophilum enhance pathogenicity of?

17
Q

What is the most common clinical sign with borreliosis?

A

None - only 10% dogs show signs
Signs occur 2-5m post tick bite
Non-specific - fever, hyporexia, enlarged LNs
Lyme arthritis - non-erosive polyarthritis (starts in joint closest to tick bite)
Lyme nephritis

18
Q

Name 4 dog breeds possibly predisposed to Lyme nephritis.

A

Golden retriever
Bernese mountain dog
Labrador
Shetland Sheepdog

19
Q

What is the best test for diagnosis of borreliosis?

A

C6 ELISA - detects antibody (IgG 3-5w post inf) to VS1E lipoprotein (only expressed by borrelia when in host)
(4Dx)

20
Q

If performing PCR for borrelia, what sample is best to use?

A

Tissue from skin biopsy next to tick bite/synovial membrane biopsy

21
Q

What cells does E. Canis infect?

22
Q

What form is blastomycosis dermatitidis in
a) the environment
b) tissue

A

Environment - mycelial form
Conidia inhaled
Converted to thick walled, broad based budding yeasts in body (8-15 micrometers)

23
Q

Where is Blastomycosis located in the USA?

A

North Eastern USA especially around great lakes

24
Q

What inflammation type do you see with blastomycosis?

A

Pyogranulomatous inflammation

25
What is BAD-1 on blastomysosis?
Virulence factor - is an adhesin that binds to host cell receptors on macrophage and helps fungus evade immune Rx
26
How is blastomycosis treated?
Itraconazole
27
Name 2 negative prognostic indicators in blastomycosis.
1. CNS involvement 2. Increased band neutrophils
28
What is the incubation period for blastomycosis?
Variable - 5-12w
29
How is blastomycosis diagnosed? What diagnostic test should you NOT perform?
Cytology to look for yeasts - thick walled, broad based, budding, 8-15 micrometers Can enhance with PAS/silver stain Urine antigen for galactomannan in fungal wall DO NOT DO FUNGAL CULTURE - health hazard to people, converts back to mycelial form
