what is an infradian rhythm
a biological rhythm that lasts longer than 24 hours but occur less frequently than once a day. examples include the menstrual cycle and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
what is the menstrual cycle
a monthly biological rhythm (~28 days on average) involving cyclical hormonal changes that prepare the female body for pregnancy. includes changes in oestrogen and progesterone levels.
what is oestrogen
a hormone that peaks around ovulation, playing a role in regulating the menstrual cycle and influencing emotional and physical states
what is progesterone
a hormone that rises after ovulation and helps prepare the uterus for possible pregnancy. it also affects mood and body temperature.
what is ovulation
the midpoint of the menstrual cycle when an egg is released. often associated with a peak in oestrogen and sometimes with changes in mood or sexual desire
what is seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
a type of depression that occurs on a seasonal cycle, typically during winter months. thought to be linked to reduced exposure to natural light and changes in internal biological processes.
