Inguinal Region Flashcards
(10 cards)
Lacunar ligament
medial end of inguinal ligament that attaches to pecten pubis, also makes up medial wall of femoral ring and part of the floor of the inguinal canal
Inguinal ligament
-from anterior superior iliac spine to pubic tubercle, thickened, inferior border of external oblique aponeurosis
Pectineal ligament
part of the lacunar ligament, forms posterior wall of femoral ring
Iliopubic tract
thickened inferior margin of transversails fascia, parallel to inguinal ligament, separates deep inguinal ring from femoral ring (landmark for nerves and blood vessels)
Inguinal canal
oblique passage through layers of anterior abdominal wall, above and parallel to inguinal ligament, situated at lateral inguinal fossa, deep inguinal ring is opening, extends to superficial inguinal ring above pubic tubercle, contains the spermatic cord or round ligament of the uterus, also contains the ilioinguinal n. in both males and females
Superficial inguinal ring
between the lateral and medial crura of the external oblique muscle aponeurosis, reflected ligament also associated with ring (continuation of inguinal ligament)
Deep inguinal ring
-spot on transversalis fascia above inguinal ligament and between anterior superior iliac spine and pubic symphysis
Contents of spermatic cord
- pampiniform plexus of veins
- ductus deferens
- cremaster artery
- testicular artery
- artery and vein of the ductus deferens
- genital branch of genitofemoral nerve
- sympathetic testicular nerve plexus
- lymph vessels
Indirect inguinal hernias
lateral to the inferior epigastric vessels and through the deep inguinal ring (most common), travels along inguinal canal, can be congenital (failure of tunica vaginalis obliteration) or acquired (intra-abdominal pressure)
Direct inguinal hernia
weak spot in anterior abdominal wall-may project through inguinal triangle which is area in medial inguinal fossa
