Injury Types and Classification of Injuries Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is an acute injury?
An immediate onset of injury
What is a chronic injury?
Occurs over a period of time and is usually a result of continuous use or repetitive strain
What is a hard tissue injury?
Injuries to bones, joints or cartilage
What is a soft tissue injury?
Injury to ligaments, tendons and muscles
What is a bone fracture?
A break or crack in part or all of the bone
What is a simple fracture?
The bone breaks and skin remains unbroken
What is a compound fracture?
The bone breaks and cuts through the skin, increasing risk of infection
What is a greenstick fracture?
The bone bends and partially breaks
What is a comminuted fracture?
The bone shatters into three or more pieces
What is a dislocation?
The bones at the joints separate from each other due to sudden impact
What is a contusion?
(Bruise) Blood vessels tear beneath the skins surface
What is a haematoma?
Heavy bruising caused by a ruptured blood vessel
What is a sprain?
Tear to a ligament
What is a strain?
Tear to a tendon or muscle tissue
What are the grades of a strain?
Grade one (5% damage to tissue), grade two (5-95% damage to tissue), grade three (complete rupture)
What is an abrasion?
Scraping of the skin on a surface leading to a risk of infection and may require stitches
What is a blister?
Friction causes layers of skin to separate causing a build up of fluid
What is a concussion?
Trauma to the brain due to a direct blow to the head
What are the symptoms of a concussion?
Memory loss, headaches, vacant
What is a stress fracture?
Hairline crack on the bone’s surface caused by repetitive forces through the bone
What are shin splints?
The overuse of the tibialis anterior which may be treated by rest, ice or painkillers
What is tendinosis?
Long-term damage to the tendon caused by repetitive strain
What is an example of tendinosis?
Achilles tendinosis in runners
What is a subluxation?
Incomplete/partial dislocation which often causes damage to the ligaments connecting bone to bone
