Innate Immune Response Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
The innate immune system responds to invading pathogens immediately upon contact.
What humoral and cellular responses does it involve?
A
- Complement activation (blood plasma)
- Phagocytosis by macrophages and neutrophils
- Natural killer cells
2
Q
What are the functions of the complement system?
A
- Produces Membrane Attack Complex (MAC) to ‘stab’ invading pathogens.
- Produces anaphylatoxins
- Primes pathogens for phagocytosis by macrophages and neutrophils.
- Attracts neutrophils to the site of infection.
3
Q
What are the 3 main pathways of complement activation?
A
- Classical pathway
- Lectin / mannose-binding pathway
- Alternative pathway
All pathways involve the activation of complement factors C3 & C5
