Gancao Ganjiang Tang

When in cold damage, the pulse is floating and (there is) spontaneous sweating, frequent urination, heart vexation, mild aversion to cold, and hypertonicity of the feet, but Guizhi Tang is given in order to attack the exterior, there is an error. If (the person) is given this formula, there will be reversal, a dryness in the throat, vexation and agitation, and counterflow vomiting, (so one should use) Gancao Ganjiang Tang to restore yang. If a counterflow (patient) recovers, and the feet become warm, one can then use Shaoyao Gancao Tang and the feet will then (be able to) stretch. If the stomach qi is disharmonious and (there is) delirious speech, give a little Tiaowei Chengqi Tang. If sweating has been promoted repeatedly, and red hot needling was used, Sini Tang governs. For lung withering and spitting up of slime and foam, without coughing, but the person is not thirsty, there must be incontinence and frequent urination. Why is that? Because the upper is deficient and cannot control the lower, for this is cold in the lung, with imperative dizziness, and copious slime and saliva, use Gancao Ganjiang Tang to warm. (JG 7)

Shenzhuo Tang

In Kidney Stickiness disease, the person’s body feels heavy, and there is cold in the lower back, as if sitting in water, with the body [displaying] water symptoms, there adversely is no thirst, urination is smooth, food intake is as before, so the disease is in the lower
burner, and there is taxation and sweating, and inside the clothes there is cold dampness, which was contracted over prolonged periods of time, there is cold below the waist, and the abdomen feels heavy as if carrying a five-thousand-coin-heavy belt. For Gan Jiang Ling Zhu Tang governs. (JG 11)

For intestinal abscess, with swelling and glomus in the lower abdomen, which hurts upon pressure as in stranguria, but urination is balanced, and periodically there is fever, spontaneous sweating, and again aversion to cold, for if the pulse is tight and slow, the pus is not yet created, and it can be purged, for there should be blood. Wenjing Tang

For women of about fifty, with diseases of incessant diarrhea of over ten times a day, fever that starts at dusk, internal urgency in the lower abdomen, abdominal bloating, vexing heat in the hand palms, and dry parched lips, what is this? The master says: this disease belongs to the category of below the belt disorders, why? For at one point in middelivery, blood stasis has stayed in the abdomen without being expelled. How does one know? Because the lips and mouth are dry and parched, that’s why. For this is governed by Wenjing Tang. (JG 22)

Wuling San

In Taiyang disease, after sweating was promoted, there is copious sweating, and the stomach is dry, so there is restlessness and agitation with inability to attain sleep, when one desires to drink water, give small amounts, allowing the stomach to be harmonious and so there will be curation. If the pulse is floating, and inhibited urination, with mild fever and consumptive thirst, then Wuling San governs. (SHL71)

After sweat promotion, the pulse is floating and rapid, and there is vexing thirst, Wuling San governs. (SHL72)

In Wind Strike with fever, which after six or seven days does not resolve and is accompanied by vexation, then there is an exterior-interior pattern, for there is thirst with desire to drink, but when water enters the mouth, there is vomiting, for this is called Water reversal, and Wuling San governs. (SHL74)

When in sudden turmoil, (there is) headache, heat effusion, and generalized pain, (if there is) more heat and (the patient) desires to drink water, Wuling San governs; (but if there is) more cold and (the patient) does not drink water, Lizhong Wan governs. (SHL386)

If a person is thin and has pulsations below the umbilicus, with spitting of foamy saliva and vertigo, [then] this is water, [and] Wuling San governs. (JG12)

Guizhi Fuling Wan For women who have preexisting mass disease, and the interruption of the period has not yet reached three months, after which there is incessant leakage, with fetal movement above the umbilicus, then it is damage by Consolidated Mass. When in pregnancy there is stirring at six months, and the three months prior [to the pregnancy] the period was uninhibited, then this is the fetus. If there is bleeding, after the menses had stopped for three months it is due to bad blood. The reason why the bleeding does not stop, is because the mass is not expelling. For one should purge the mass, and Guizhi Fuling Wan governs. (JG 20)

Fengyin Tang (adjusted) Fengyin Tang eliminates heat that causes paralysis and seizures. If the body feels heavy, and sweating has gradually lightened, after prolonged periods of time, there will be quivering all over the body, and upon quivering there will be pain in the chest, and also there will imperatively be sweating [everywhere] above the waist, and no sweat below, for there is moving pain in waist and loins, as if there is an object [moving] under the skin, for severe cases will have inability to take in food, with heavy bodily [sensation], restlessness, and difficult urination, for this is yellow sweat, and Guizhi Jia Huangqi Tang governs. In one’s mind there is a desire to eat, but one is consecutively unable to eat, for one is continuously listless, with desire to lie down but unable to lie down; with desire to move about but unable to move about; when there is desire to eat, the food can seem appetizing, but sometimes can appear to stink without even having smelled the food; [the patient] is as if cold, but without cold; is as if warm, but without heat; with bitter taste and dark urination, for no herbs are able to cure [the problem], and upon ingestion herbs there is severe vomiting and diarrhea, as if one is possessed by spirits, but then the body appears normal, while the pulse is mildly rapid. (SHL72) In Wind Strike with fever, which after six or seven days does not resolve and is accompanied by vexation, then there is an exterior-interior pattern, for there is thirst with desire to drink, but when water enters the mouth, there is vomiting, for this is called Water reversal, and Wuling San governs. (SHL74) When in sudden turmoil, (there is) headache, heat effusion, and generalized pain, (if there is) more heat and (the patient) desires to drink water, Wuling San governs; (but if there is) more cold and (the patient) does not drink water, Lizhong Wan governs. (SHL96) For all yellowing, with abdominal pain and vomiting, Chaihu Tang is indicated. (JG15) For vomiting with fever, Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG17) In muddled oppression of a newly delivered woman, the pulse is faint and weak, with inability to eat, and adversely stool is hard, there is only sweating on the head, why is that, [because there is] blood deficiency and reversal, for reversal imperatively shows muddled oppression. When oppression patients are about to resolve, there imperatively is great sweat excretion. In blood deficiency there is reversal from below, with orphan yang exiting upwards, and so there is sweating on the head. And so it is that newly-delivered women have a tendency to sweating, because of death of yin and deficiency of blood, with yang qi being abundant by itself, and so after the sweating, yin yang return [to balance]. For hardness of stool, and vomiting with inability to eat, Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG21) When after seven or eight days of wind strike in women, there is alternation between chills and fever, occurring with periodicity, and interruption of the menstrual flow, this is heat entering the blood chamber. The blood must therefore congeal, and so cause this malaria-like presentation, occurring with periodicity, for Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG22)

If (there is) incessant retching, distress below the heart, and depression and mild vexation, it means (that the disease) has not yet resolved, giving Da Chaihu Tang to precipitate will lead to recovery. (SHL103) When cold damage has lasted for more than ten days, and heat binds in the interior, yet there is alternating aversion to cold and heat, give Da Chaihu Tang; if there is only chest bind and great heat effusion is absent, indicating water bind in the chest and rib-side, and slight sweat issuing only from the head, Da Xianxiong Tang governs. (SHL 136) When in cold damage there is heat effusion and sweating that brings no resolution, hard glomus in below the heart, retching, vomiting, and diarrhea then Da Chaihu Tang governs. (SHL 236) The disease of Grain Jaundice, has chills and fever, no food intake, vertigo upon eating, restlessness in the chest and heart, and after a long time there will be yellowing which is Grain jaundice, and Yinchenhao Tang governs. Da Qinglong Tang When in Taiyang wind strike the pulse is floating and tight, and there is heat effusion, aversion to cold, generalized pain, absence of sweating, and vexation and agitation, Da Qinglong Tang governs. If the pulse is faint and weak and there is sweating and aversion to wind, the person cannot take this formula. If one takes it there will be reverse flow and jerking sinews and twitching flesh, indicating an adverse treatment. (SHL 38) When in cold damage, the pulse is floating and moderate, and there is no generalized pain, only generalized heaviness, with sudden periods of lightness, and there is no Shaoyin disease, Da Qinglong Tang will promote sweating and resolve the disease. (SHL 39) For persons diseased with Overflow Rheum, sweating should be promoted, Da Qinglong tang governs, and Xiao Qinglong Tang governs as well. (JG12)
