Inorganic chemistry Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is group 1’s reaction with water:
lithium
sodium
potassium
lithium - fizzes steadily
sodium - melts into a ball then fizzes quickly
potassium - gives off sparks and hydrogen, burns with lilac flame
What is the trend as you go down group 1
Reactivity increases as you go down Group 1
Describe group 7 at room temperature:
chlorine
bromine
iodine
Chlorine = yellow gas
Bromine = red-brown liquid
Iodine = purple solid
What is the trend as you go down group 7
- reactivity decreases as you go down Group 7
- mpt and bpt increases as you go down Group 7
Explain the greenhouse effect
- electromagnetic radiation at most wavelengths from the sun passes throughout the earths atmosphere
- earth absorbs some radiation and warms up.
- some heat is radiated from the earth as infrared radiation
- some of this IR radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases in atmosphere
- atmosphere warms up leading to greenhouse effect and global warming
metal + acid —> ?
metal + acid —> salt + hydrogen
metal carbonate + acid –> ?
metal carbonate + acid –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
metal + base —> ?
metal + base —> salt + water
test for hydrogen
use a burning splint held at the open end of a test tube
+ result = squeaky pop sound
test for oxygen
use a glowing splint inserted into a test tube of gas
+ result = splint relights
test for carbon dioxide
bubble gas through limewater
+ result = limewater turn milky (cloudy)
test for ammonia
damp red litmus paper
+ result = turn blue
test for chlorine
damp blue litmus paper bleached
+ result = bleaches (turns white )
Flame test :
lithium = ?
lithium = red
Flame test :
sodium = ?
sodium = yellow
Flame test :
potassium = ?
potassium = lilac
Flame test :
calcium = ?
calcium = orange-red
Flame test :
copper = ?
copper = green
Describe tests for cations :
Copper (II)
Iron (II)
Iron (III)
Copper (II) = blue precipitate
Iron (II) = green precipitate
Iron (III) = brown precipitate
Describe tests for anions :
• halide ions
Halide ions :
• add dilute nitric acid and then silver nitrate solution
chloride = white precipitate
bromide = cream precipitate
iodide = yellow precipitate
Describe tests for anions :
• sulfate ions
Sulfate ions :
• add dilute hydrochloric acid, and then barium chloride solution
sulfate ions = white precipitate
Describe tests for anions :
• carbonate ions
Carbonate ions :
• carbonates react with dilute acids to create carbon dioxide
• bubbled through limewater
carbonate ions = limewater cloudy
Describe a test for the presence of water
•anyhudrous copper(ll) sulfate is white
•when water is present, it turns blue
Describe a test to show if a sample of water is pure
• measure the boiling point
• pure water boils at 100°C
