Inorganic ions Flashcards
(5 cards)
Where can inorganic ions be found in the body?
Occur in solution in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms.
What are the 3 key organic ions?
Phosphate ions
Sodium ions
Hydrogen ions
What is the role of phosphate ions in the body?
Phosphate ions form the phosphate groups of DNA/RNA nucleotides. This enables nucleotides to join together - phosphodiester bonds form
Phosphate ions form the phosphate groups in ATP releases energy.
What is the role of sodium ions in the body?
for the co transport of glucose and amino acids across cell membranes.
What is the role of hydrogen ions in the body?
It maintains pH levels in the body. Too much H+ means low pH.
Affects rate of enzyme controlled reactions as it causes enzymes to denature.
