Q

What is the role of phosphate ions in the body?

A

Phosphate ions form the phosphate groups of DNA/RNA nucleotides. This enables nucleotides to join together - phosphodiester bonds form

Phosphate ions form the phosphate groups in ATP releases energy.

Q

What is the role of hydrogen ions in the body?

A

It maintains pH levels in the body. Too much H+ means low pH.

Affects rate of enzyme controlled reactions as it causes enzymes to denature.
