Insider Groups Flashcards
(7 cards)
point
Members of pressure groups can also join insider groups as a way to attempt to influence the Government.
explain
This can be seen as an effective method as having the ‘ear of government’ gives insider groups a significant advantage and can allow them to influence policy from the inside in a way that suits their aims.
example
For example, in meetings with the public health minister and the chief medical officer, the BMA voiced its strong support for the Government’s proposal to raise the smoking age by a year, every year, until it applies to the whole population, ultimately banning smoking entirely.
rebuttal
However, having insider status is no guarantee of influence.
rebuttal explain
The Government is under no obligation to listen to or act upon the demands of an insider group.
rebuttal example
For example, the BMA has resorted to prolonged strike action in an attempt to improve junior doctor pay in England.

Therefore, despite insider groups having the ‘ear of government, it is still mostly ineffective because the Government doesn’t have to act on your demands just because you are in an insider group.
