29
Q

How do you communicate with someone who has a hearing impairment? How does that compare to communication with a 7 or 8 year old?

A

Communication with someone with a hearing impairment can sometimes be difficult. The first thing I would check for is if the patient has a hearing aid. This way I would know that they may be able to better hear me than someone who did not. I would then talk in a very slow and clear manner, and if it is okay with them, I would raise my tone higher than normal to help them hear. It is important to play off of their body language and facial expressions which could tell me a lot about whether they are understanding me or not. I would also have them repeat back to me what was said so that I could be sure that they understood in order for me to gain consent. I would also be very patient and treat them with dignity and respect as I would any other patient I would see. Written communication or diagrams are also a very viable option. Avoid medical jargon, use analogies they can relate to, ask them if they have a question. For a child as young as 7 or 8 it is likely that they do not have a similar level of understanding to an adult. As a result, it would be reasonable to use analogies to help them understand a topic, or perhaps a diagram or drawing to illustrate a point. I would of course avoid any medical Jargon and use the parents to facilitate understanding if needs be.

A
