Components of Laryngoscopy

A
  1. Position patient
    - head approx 2-5 cm off ground, towel or pillow under occiput
  2. Prepare equipment
    - Check laryngoscope (bulb secure, functioning, tight)
    - Place alongside left of patient’s head
    - Place suction equipment on the right of the patients head
  3. Prepare patient
    - Elevate pt head
    - Moderate extension of head and jaw
    - neutral or sniffing position to improve direct visualisation of the larynx
  4. Insert Laryngoscope
    - Right had supporting and steadying patients head
    - Pick up and hold laryngoscope lightly by the handle with the left hand, thumb along handle
    - Gently insert laryngoscope blade down extreme right side of mouth
  5. Inspect upper airway
    - check for foreign body in oropharynx
    - suck it out if you find one
  6. Sight vocal chords
    - move blade in keeping tongue to the left
    - tip of blade in vallecular groove
    - No angulation
  7. Check
    - visually inspect airway down to vocal chords where possible ensuring no foreign body present
