Is Birling a communist?
Birling is a strong capitalist who doesn’t believe in community and helping others, rather looking after himself and his business making a profit.
Why is Birling happy about Shelia’s marriage?
Birling wants to build ties between his business (Birling and Company) and Crofts Limited.
Hence why he invites Gerald to their house and attempts to impress the guest with expensive port and cigars.
Does Birling accept responsibility for Eva’s death?
No, he blatantly says that he “can’t accept responsibility” despite him firing Eva for asking for more money which Birling could easily afford
He doesn’t want to accept any blame and tries to make this sound like he’s minding his own business.
Is Birling socially superior to his wife Sibil?
Sybil is Birling’s social superior and he is lucky to be married to someone of a higher status. This may tell us that Sybil is a bit desperate and can’t find anyone of her class or perhaps she married Birling for money.
