Install Steel Studs Flashcards
(38 cards)
How are steel headers installed in non-load-bearing walls.
1) Cut headers 12” (300 mm) longer than opening
2) Cut flanges about 6” (150 mm) from each end and bend them to fit between studs
3) Attach with screws crimps or rivets
How is a plumbing chase built using steel stud framing?
Two walls that are tied together with gypsum board cross ties to connect both walls.
What is a tool used to attach steel studs to track?
Crimper
How is a track attached to ceramic tile floors?
Epoxy adhesive or drilled holes and expansion anchors
How do you lay out steel stud framing?
Layout partitions on the floor with chalk lines and duplicate them on the ceiling. Use plumb bob and laser to mark them accurately.
If wood trim or wood base is to be nailed to wall framing, what should you use?
use a wood plate of the same width as the track for a nailer. Fasten the plate at 600 mm o.c. (24”) and attach the track to it.
How to fasten bottom track to concrete?
Expansion anchor or epoxy adhesives.
How to fasten the bottom track to tile and stone?
Good results obtained with epoxy adhesive or pre-drilled holes and expansion anchors.
How to fasten bottom track to carpeted floors?
Use a double-sided tape or screw when attaching the lower track to the carpet.
How to fasten top track to ceiling?
Fasten top track to sheet metal or wood joist that supports the ceiling.
What screws are used to secure the tracks through the plaster or drywall finish?
Wood screws or sheet metal screws.
In exposed grid systems, how are tracks fastened to steel tracks?
Sheet metal screws are used to fasten the steel track to the metal T-bar grid.
When there is no backing support, how can you attach steel studs?
use toggle bolts.
In suspension systems, track is attached how?
sheet metal screw placed through the acoustic tile into the H or T member.
fasten steel track to concrete?
powder actuated fastener.
how is steel stud installed at corners and intersections?
butted or 20 mm gap to allow drywall to pass through
How do you provide stability to track when backing is not solid?
The ceiling backing is not solid, lap the track and screw it at corners and intersections.
To allow for deflection and expansion, studs should be cut:
6 mm to 12 mm shorter than the full distance between the top and bottom tracks.
Crimper works how?
Punches through the edge of the stud and the track to form an interlocking curl that ties the two members together.
If wall is fire rated, do you crimp top and bottom?
Only the bottom, do not crimp the top
How can you get greater stability for studs?
Use screws on studs at corners and openings.
At intersection, where must you place the first studs?
50 mm away (2”) from the intersection wall of other constructions, as this will allow screw gun to be used to attach the drywall board.
How do you frame steel studs at openings?
Secure track to the floor at each side of the opening and erect studs, next studs together or screw them back to back. Or use a wood stud.
How do you make headers for openings?
Make them at least 12” longer than the width of the opening.
Cut flanges 6” from each end and bend them to fit between the studs.
