Instrument Flashcards
(61 cards)
What is the cloud height formula?
(Temp - dew point)/ 4.4 deg F (2.5 deg C)
Multiplied by 1000
What are the speed limitations on copter appchs?
Max spd 90 kias or less
No more than 70 kias on final & missed segments
If annotated, holding may also be limited to 70
To apply the helicopter viz reduction what speed must be flown?
Must slow to no more than 90 kias at the missed appch point
Helicopters flying non-copter appchs may reduce viz mins by…
1/2 published CAT A landing viz minima or to 1/4 sm, whichever is greater unless annotated w/ visibility reduction by helicopters NA
What are the 6 categories of stabilization/automatic flight control systems for helicopters?
Aerodynamic surfaces Trim systems (cyclic centering) Stability augmentation systems (SAS) Attitude retention systems Autopilot systems Flight directors
IFR cert may req one or more of these
What are the requirements for a contact appch?
Has to be pilot requested
Must remain clear of clouds w/ 1 mi viz
Airport must have an IAP
Used in lieu of conducting IAP
What is the missed appch procedure from a circle to land appch?
Initial climbing turn toward the landing runway & continue the turn until established on missed appch course
Straight in minimums cannot be published if…
Normal rate of descent would be exceeded
Runway alignment factor of 30 deg (15 deg for GPS appchs) is exceeded
What does the inverted W symbol mean?
Indicates NOTAMs or air traffic advisories are not provided for outages which occur in WAAS LNAV/VNAV or LPV svc
Use LNAV or circling mins for flight planning to these airports
Does a VDP provide any additional protection for the visual segment below the MDA?
Does the VDA?
Yes, if descent below the MDA is started at or after the VDP
The VDA is only advisory & does not provide added protection
How is LNAV MDA established?
A line is drawn horizontally at obstacle height & 250’ added for req obstacle clearance (ROC)
Other factors may req more than 250’ to be added
When is radar service terminated?
Automatically terminated when landing complete or when told to switch to advisory freq, whichever occurs first
How are RNAV routes depicted?
Blue lines identified by letter Q (high altitude) or T (low altitude)
What RNAV level are published RNAV routes?
RNAV 2 unless specifically charted RNAV 1
When are position reports not required?
When informed you are in radar contact
What is the formula for compensating for compass turn errors?
15 deg + 1/2 latitude
FNL 40 deg
15 + 20 = 35 deg
Or
10/30 turn….10/20/30 rule UNOS
When must you report passing an “on request” reporting point?
Only necessary when requested by ATC
What does RNP mean?
95% navigation accuracy performance that meets a specified value for a particular phase of flight/flight segment
Incorporates performance monitoring & alerting features
What mode must GPS be in for takeoff?
Terminal mode
TSO-C129 must have departure airport in FP to get correct sensitivity
AC 90-100A
RNAV 1 requirement
Req total system error of no more than 1 nm for 95% of flight time
RNAV 2 requirement
Req total system error of no more than 2 nm for 95% of flight time
ATC instruction “hold for release” means?
The pilot may not depart utilizing that IFR clearance until a release time or additional instructions are issued by ATC
RAIM prediction requirements for TSO 129…
RAIM prediction req for entire route of flight
No outage greater than 5 min
Airports no more than 60 nm apart on route
Term or appch RAIM available at destination
RAIM prediction requirements for TSO 145/146…
No RAIM prediction req if WAAS available through entire route
No WAAS avail must do RAIM check
