Integrating Cells into Tissues Flashcards
(13 cards)
In the lateral domain how do cells remained attached to each other?
tight junction, desmosomes, gap junction
What is the basal domain?
bottom section of a cell where it attaches to the basement membrane
Name the ways a cell anchor in the basal domain
hemidesmosomes, focal adhesions
What is the function of a tight junction?
seal between 2 cells
What is the role of a desmosome?
strengthen the junction between 2 cells
What does a gap junction allow cell to do?
connection proteins form channels, allowing communication
Name and explain the function of the extensions in the apical domain
microvilli: increase surface area, stereovilli: epididymis and sensory hair cells in the ear, cilia: motile
Name the protein that attaches the cell cytoskeleton to extracellular matrix
integrins
List the ways cells can communicate
DIRECT: gap junctions, AUTOCRINE: to self, PARACRINE: next to, ENDOCRINE: secreted into blood, SYNAPTIC: electrical signal along nerves neurotransmitter, NEUROCRINE: electrical signal down nerve releasing neurotransmitter to blood
What does senescence mean?
loss of a cell’s power of division and growth due to short telomere length
What is the difference between endo and exocytosis?
endo: into the cell, exo: out of the cell
What is the name given to cell that do not have a surface and give example?
epithelioid: islets of Langerhans, parenchyma of adrenal glands
What is a fibroblast?
synthesise and secret ground substance and fibres procollagen –> collagen (vit C required), involved in wound healing
