Integrity/EA Flashcards
(4 cards)
what are the reasons to disassociate from evil given by Hill?
- express your concerns: underlying values expressed, to show solidarity with victims -> Hills worry = you can express your concern, but why not leave it unexpressed from a u viewpoint?
- protect your credibility, your currency, meaningfully associate with good. -> Hill’s worry = acting for self-serving reasons
What is Williams critique on u?
According to Williams, u ignores a key moral consideration: we’re more responsible for what we do than what other people do (Jim and the Indians example). He makes a distinction between your projects and someone elses projects. He critiques u from the value of integrity.
What is MacAskills’ weak claim and what are his considerations for it?
You would make a greater difference by taking the lucrative career and becoming a philanthropist than by becoming a charity worker:
- financial discrepancy
- fungibility -> support best cases, most effective charities (effective altruism)
- uncertainty: you can’t predict what the most relevant future causes will be
- replaceability: if you don’t take the job someone else will
what is MA’s strong claim?
Often, it’s ethically preferable to pursue philanthropy through a higher paid but morally controversial career (arms industry etc). Worries:
- Victim- centered/harm-based objections: some careers involve harming others. For a victim it’s better if S took the lucrative job because the harm would still be caused but she would also donate so victims also get donations.
- Agent-centered/integrity-based objections: some careers involve a violation of the worker’s integrity.
If you’re concerned about climate change, isn’t it a violation of your integrity to work for a petrochemical company? Cf. -> Williams.
MA: often people don’t have such commitments. Even if you do have them, you’re mistaken.
