Integument Terms Flashcards
(28 cards)
acantholysis
separation between keratinocytes • usually stratum spinosum, hence the name
microscopic lesion
acanthosis
↑ed # of cells in the stratum spinosum
microscopic lesion
acral
pertaining to distal extremities
atopy
inherited hypersensitivity to contact or inhaled (?) allergens
results in pruritic skin disease
Bulla
large blister
a bulla is larger than a vesicle, but the process is the same
callus
localized hyperkeratosis
- due to chronic irritation
- especially in skin over bony prominences
comedo
plug of keratin & sebum in the ostium and lumen of a hair follicle
crust
surface accumulation of dried serum, exudates, blood, keratin
epidermal collarette
ring of keratin scale on the epidermal surface at the periphery of a skin lesion
a macroscopic & surface lesion
epidermitis
inflammation concentrated in the epidermis
epidermolysis
separation between epidermis and dermis
erythema
reddening of skin
folliculitis
inflammation of hair follicle
furunculosis
nodular inflammation around or adjacent to a ruptured hair follicle
hyperkeratosis
increased thickness of stratum corneum
- orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis
- parakeratotic hyperkeratosis
orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis
without nuclear retention
1 - lamellar
—keratin appears as individual layers
2 - compact
—the individual layers are compacted together
—often an indicator of self-trauma bc of pruritus
parakeratotic hyperkeratosis
with nuclear retention
macule
circumscribed color change in skin w/o change in texture or thickness
• color can be derived from blood or melanin
a macroscopic lesion
nodule
roughly spherical solid bump or swelling, intermediate in size between a papule and a mass
panniculitis
inflammation of subcutis
papule
small solid bump in skin (papule < nodule < mass)
plaque
flat elevation of skin (often with crust formation)
pruritus
sensation of itching
pustule
small aggregate of pus
• microscopic to a few mm in diameter
• usually within or just beneath epidermis
