The dermis is divided into two layer. Which is the thickest?
The reticular layer and most of the dermis.
What happens to epithelial cell as they migrate to the surface layer of your skin?
Death and cornification, a process called desquamation
What are the 3 layer of the integumentary system?
Epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous or hypodermis
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
Thermoregulation Reservoir for blood Protection from external environment Cutaneous sensations Excretion and absorption Vitamin D synthesis
What is apart of the subcutaneous layer?
It is not apart of the skin. Contains areolar and adipose tissue.
What tissue is the epidermis made of?
keratinized squamous epithelium
what tissue is the dermis made of?
connective tissue
what are the four types of cells in the epidermis?
Keratinocytes (protects from the heat, microbes and chemicals)
Melanocytes (Produce pigment melanin to absorbs UV light)
Langerhans cells (immune response),
Merkel cells (Tactile disc, touch)
What are the 5 basic layers of the epidermis from superficial to deep?
