- sense organ feels heat , touch, & pressure

Dermatitis
A
general term that refers to an inflammation of the skin
- Contact dermatitis- contact with something that irritates the skin or causes allergic reactions
- Atopic- “eczema” crusty skin rashes & the skin may be itchy, red, scaly, & sore
- treatment includes topical or oral corticosteroids

A
- medical term that means itching

Candida
A
- type of fungus that can grow on or in the body & cause infection
Thrush- candida of the mouth
Vaginal candida - yeast Infection
- report yellow color of skin & whites of eyes ( sign of liver toxicity) if a resident is taking anti-fungal meds

Changes of Aging includes:

- skin is thinner, drier, & more fragile
- skin is elastic
- hair thins & may turn gray
- wrinkles & brown spots appear { liver spots}
- nails are harder more brittle
- protective fatty tissue is lost, so the person may feel colder
- dry, itchy skin may result from lack of oil from sebaceous gland

Fungus
A
type of living organism
- athletes foot ( tinea pedis)
- ringworm (tinea corporis) can appear anywhere on the body & causes red flat circular rash with dry scaly skin
- powder is most useful in treating fungal infections

A
- adult lice
- treated by permethrin cream ( nix or eliminate) {topical treatment}

A
- Type of injury to the skin
Closed wound - skin surface has not been broken
Open wound - skin that is not intact. Examined and cleaned with various liquids such as saline or antiseptic solution

Cellulitis
A
- common condition that affects the skin & soft tissue, can develop when sores, cuts, or open wounds let bacteria through the skin barrier
- staphylococci ( staphy) & streptococci (strep) are two bacteria’s most likely to cause cellulitis
- A mild infection may be treated with antibiotics
- side effects of these antibiotics include upset stomach, diarrhea, & nausea

Psoriasis
A
- chronic skin disorder
- autoimmune condition ( body attackin itself)
- common sites ( scalp, knees, elbows, trunk)
- combination of a strong corticosteroid & a topical vitamin d analog is usually prescribed

A
Some medications can cause photosensitivity, or increased sensitivity to sunlight
