Integumentary System Test Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are the major functions of the integumentary system?
Protective Covering for the body
Keeps water and other essential nutrients in the body
Keeps water out
Protects the body from various kinds of damage
Temperature regulation
Produces vitamin D
Sensations to pain
The outermost layer of skin
Provides a waterproof barrier
Creates our skin tone
Epidermis
Contains tough connective tissues
Hair glands
Sweat glands
Dermis
Contains blood vessels
Dermis
Release their products on the surface of the skin.
Exocrine glands
A mixture of oily substances and fragmented cells
A lubricant that keeps skin soft and prevents hair from becoming brittle
Contains chemicals that kill bacteria on the surface of the skin
Sebum
When a sebaceous gland is blocked by sebum- whitehead
If the accumulated material oxidizes and dries, it darkens- blackhead
An active infection of the sebaceous glands accompanied by pimples on the skin
ACNE
Two major types of skin glands
- Sebaceous Glands
2. Sweat Glands
Found all over the skin except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
Sebaceous (Oil) Glands
Widely distributed on the skin.
More than 2.5 million
Sweat Glands
When sweat reaches the skin surface through a duct is called a _______
Pore
Only the epidermis is damaged
Area becomes red and swollen
Ex. Sunburn
Partial-thickness burns
1st degree burn
Involve injury to the epidermis and the upper region of the dermis
Skin is red and blisters appear
Partial-thickness burns
2nd Degree burn
Destroy the entire thickness of the skin, so these burns are called Full-thickness Burns
Burned area appears gray/white/blackened because the nerve endings in the area are destroyed
Underlying tissues are exposed
3rd Degree Burns
What are the two major types of membrane
- Connective membranes
2. Epithelial Membranes
Includes cutaneous, mucous,and serous membranes
Epithelial
Includes synovial membranes
Connective membranes
Cover surfaces
Line body cavities
Form protective sheets around organs
Body membranes
It’s superficial epidermis is composed of keratinizing stratified Squamous epithelium
Mostly dense (fibrous) connective tissue
Exposed to air and is a dry membrane
Cutaneous membrane
Composed of epithelial tissues sitting on a loose connective tissue membrane.
Lines all body cavities that open to the exterior
Mucous membrane
Composed of simple squamous sitting on a layer of loose connective tissue.
Line body cavities that are closed to the exterior
surround organs and the cavities that they are located in
Lubricate and prevent vital organs from rubbing or having any friction with their containing cavity
Create a space between the organ and the wall of the cavity.
serous membrane
Composed of loose connective tissue and have no epithelial cells.
Line the capsules that surround joints
Synovial fluid
