Intelligence
Ability to learn from experience, solve problems and use knowledge to adapt
General intelligence (g)
Underlies all mental abilities; measured by every task on intelligence test
Garner’s multiple intelligences:
8 relatively independent intelligences
Savant Syndrome
a condition which a person otherwise limited in mental ability has an exceptional skill such as computation or drawing
Sternberg’s 3 intelligences
- Analytical intelligence
- Creative intelligence
- Practical intelligence
Emotional intelligence (4)
Ability to perceive, understand, manage and use emotions
Aptitude tests
tests designed to predict a person’s future performance (aptitude is CAPACITY to learn)
Intelligence quotient (IQ)
- ratio of mental age (ma) to chronological age (ca) multiplied by 100
IQ = ma/ca x 100
Wechsler Adult Intelligence scale (WAIS)
- Most widely used intelligence tests
- Contain verbal and performance subtests
Standardization
defining uniform testing procedures and meaningful scores by comparison with the performance of a pre-tested group
Reliability
the extent to which a test yields consistent results, as assessed by the consistency of scores on two halves of the test, on alternative forms of the test or on retesting
Cross sectional study
compares people of different ages at the same point in time
Longitudinal study
follows and retests the same cohort of people over time
Crystalized intelligence
accumulated knowledge of verbal skills; tends to increase with age
Fluid intelligence:
- ability to reason speedily and abstractly
- tends to decrease with age, especially during late childhood
Intellectual disability
Difficulty adapting to the demands of life as defined by 3 areas:
- Conceptual (e.g. reading, concepts of money)
- Social (e.g. social responsibility, following rules)
- Practical (e.g. health and personal care)
