Cohen: Mods+rockers -> moral panic -> folk devils -> deviancy amplification
A
- As a by product of creating moral panics, the media and other agencies created folk devils.
- After first reporting of events, Cohen noticed harsher policing against those seemed to be ‘folk devils’
- Gov + police clampdowns increased.
- This led to deviancy amplification - more crime as a result bc of more reporting

- M/c areas - parents were able to convince the justice system that their child was having a ‘tough time’
- Police = convinced parents could deal with the situation themselves, so less likely charged.
- Reflects lower rates of m/c delinquency.

A
- Brock Turner found guilt of sexually assaulting a girl.
- Parents stood up for him in court and suggesting his life shouldn’t be ruined for ‘20 minutes of action’
- Received 6 months sentence, when the maximum sentence is 14 years.

A
Once an activity is labelled as deviant, this label becomes attatched to the individual.
This then becomes their master status - one that overrides all other characteristics

- Laws were created as part of a moral crusade to stamp out usage as the use of marijuana went against traditional American values.
