intereference , young double slit Flashcards

1
Q

What is the equation for young double slit experiment

and meaning of the letters

A

λ = sX/D

λ is wavelength

D is the distance between slit and the screen

s is the slit separation

x is fringe separatiaion

Q

How to carry out young double slit experiment

A

Use a monochoromatic light source, and the light waves will reach the single slit and be diffracted to be in phase. Then light waves will reach the double slits where they will be diffracted at both slits. They are coherent at double slit as they come from same monochromatic light source. And use slits of similar gap to the wavelength

After passing through, the diffracted waves overlap and interfere.

in places of constructive interference there is bright fringes

places of destructive interference there is dark fringes

out of phase = no light

in phase = light

Q

What does the principle of superposition state

A

When two or more waves of the same type meet, the resultant wave can be found by adding the displacements of the individual waves.

what does phase difference mean

A

difference between the distances travelled by two waves arriving at the same point.
