Unwanted child-
Henry 2011-
The Prague Study (1961-1963) investigated the long-term effects of being born from unwanted pregnancies due to denied abortions. It followed 220 children whose mothers were denied abortion twice and compared them with 220 children from accepted pregnancies over 35 years.
Key Findings:
Worsening Psychosocial Outcomes Over Time – Differences in development and mental well-being widened as they aged, though they slightly reduced by age 30.
Higher Risk of Psychiatric Issues – Children born from unwanted pregnancies had higher rates of psychiatric disorders compared to both the control group and their own siblings.
Greater Impact on Only Children – Those without siblings experienced even worse psychosocial outcomes than those with siblings.
Long-Term Mental Health Risks – The study highlights that being born from an unwanted pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of poor mental well-being in adulthood.
Conclusion:
This study provides strong evidence that being born into an unwanted pregnancy, particularly when abortion was denied, increases the likelihood of negative mental health outcomes and developmental difficulties in later life.
