What are the advantages of an open plan?

- Noise can be disruptive
- Room may look empty

All rooms in a house are separated by walls and doors

- Interaction and communication between people are reduced

What is functionality?
A space is effective and serves the purpose for which it is intended. The physical and psychological space needs of the people living in the home should be taken in.

2) Work - Where work is done
3) Social - Public / entertainment areas for interactions
What safety is needed in a home?
Enough lighting, electrical safety, protection against intruders and weather
What accessibility is important in a home?
People in the home are able to get to all places and to outside of the home. Unobstructed access to all areas.
What is the functionality, safety and accessibility in a work area?
Functionality - in kitchen there is triangle of oven/stove, sink and pantry/fridge
Safety - easy floor space and traffic routes should not interfere
Accessibility - Built in storage and easy access
What is the functionality, safety and accessibility in a rest area?
Functionality - Provide privacy, convenience and comfort
Safety - Easy access for emergency, clear lighting, free floor space
Accessibility - bathrooms need easy access from everywhere.
What is the functionality, safety and accessibility in a social area?
Functionality - Space for activities at the same time. Good ventilation and lighting
Safety - lighting, clear traffic patterns
Accessibility - Provide access from and to outside areas.
What is building orientation?
refers to how a house is situated on a plot

- Sun comes from north, north room gets most natural light and heating
- Longest access should be east - west
- West receives strongest sun

- South facing for cool summer breezes
- warm air rises so air vents needed
