The value chain describes:
Categories of activities within organisations which, together, create a product or service
The resources are:
The assets that organisations have or can call upon (from partners or suppliers) (what we have)
Capability or competences:
The ways the assets are used or deployed effectively (what we do well)
Porters firm value chain:
Support activities/primary activities - helps analyse the strengths/weaknesses of the org, what adds value/cost AND helps allocate and interrelate an orgs resources and capabilities
Strengths vs. Key Success Factors
Strengths - resources/capabilities an org posses - areas or activities they are good at
Key Success factors (KSF’s) - resources/capabilities that are needed to succeed in PARTICULAR CONTEXTS (industry/market/location)
How to best employ your resources and capabilities:
Look at your resources &capabilities that promote your performance vs. What key success factors promote competitors Competitors to look at ALTERNATIVE MARKETS
