Internal Brain Structures Flashcards
(19 cards)
Frontal lobe
Conscious control movement of the skeletal muscle. Higher functions include judgement and foresight.
Parietal lobe
Lobe of the cerebrum deep to its lobe. Receives sensory input from the skin and proprioceptors. The place for logical thinking (problem solving)
Occipital lobe
Primary visual areal (where visual information synapses, after the thalamus); visual association area.
Corpus Callosum
Function: connect the two cerebral hemispheres allowing for communication between the two.
Pineal gland (epithalamus region)
Secretes the hormone melatonin, which influences circadian rhythms.
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temperature, metabolism, sleep, sex and emotional control (limbic system functions. Controls hormone secretion from the pituitary gland.
thalamus (intermediate region)
Primary relay center for all sensory information coming into the brain (except olfaction).
Pons
“Bridge” of fiber tracts connecting the cerebral hemisphere to the cerebellar hemispheres. Contains centers for control of respiration.
Medulla Oblongata
Contains major respiratory and cardiac centers that control your heartrate, breathing, and blood pressure, etc. including other ANS processes.
Spinal Cord
Communication link between the brain the rest of the body, relaying sensory information and motor commands.
Central canal
Part of ventricular system responsible for carrying CSF and nutrients from the brain through the spinal cord
Third ventricle (hypothalamus)
Regulates body temperature, mood, sex,
Fourth ventricle
Cerebral aqueduct
Central Canal
Lateral Ventricles
Cerebellum
Superior Colliculi (median view)
Inferior Colliculi(median view)
