Q

Develop an understanding of psychological science in international human development

A

The role of the Beneficial Action Theory

Many areas of psychological science contribute to human development goals including: developmental psychology; educational psychology; health psychology; environmental psychology; community psychology; industrial and organisational psychology.

Many well intentioned practices in international human development are not evidence-based, as recently demonstrated in countries that experienced the most severe health and social consequences resulting from COVID 19.

There are professional and ethical requirement for psychologists to engage exclusively in evidence-based practices.

Beneficial Action Theory (Toumbourou, 2016) describes how psychological science can encourage evidence-based practices that contribute to international human development.

-framework of how to benefit people

Q

Explain how life-course development theories are relevant to international human development.

A

Life-course development theories integrate scientific studies in areas such as psychology, neurology and biology to improve international understanding of healthy human development pathways
Life-course theories provide guidance in areas such as parenting, education and healthy lifestyle behaviours, influencing international human development programs such as those preventing tobacco use and violence against women and children.
Life-course theories explain why people differ in their support for international human development. Experiences with adversity and trauma in childhood and adolescence increase hostility and violence towards unfamiliar and foreign (unfamiliar out-group) populations, while experiencing security and care increases compassion and care towards foreign international groups.

he Deakin University Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED: www.deakin.edu.au/seed) includes research and practice to advance international human development. The Deakin worldly campaign encouraged student opportunities to experience international human development activities.

Beneficial Action Theory:
- more hostile to outgroups if you have experienced hostility as a child/have insecure attachement.

Q

Explain how the Sustainable Development Goals are relevant to Indigenous communities

A

The Sustainable Development Goals have a high level of relevance to indigenous communities. For example look at https://sdgs.org.au/project/health-and-water-in-remote-indigenous-communities/
It is important that all human development programs integrate with and respect the values and priorities of indigenous communities. If human development programs can do this well, it is more likely that the Sustainable Development Goals will be achieved to a high standard.
A key skill for Deakin HPS209 students is the ability to listen with respect to understand the values and priorities of indigenous communities.

Q

Explain how community coalition interventions contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

A

Australian community programs are contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals https://sdgs.org.au/
Communities that Care Ltd (www.communitiesthatcare.org.au) is an Australian charity offering a five phase community capacity building process that has been shown to be effective at increasing community investment in evidence-based prevention service delivery to encourage the healthy development of children and young people.
Australian communities that complete the Communities That Care process show significant reductions in adolescent antisocial behaviour and alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use and risk factors and improved protective factors, compared to matched municipalities (Toumbourou et al., 2019). Similar findings are found in overseas studies.
Communities That Care encourages protective factors using the social development model (Toumbourou, 2016, p. 251), assisting communities to measurably improve youth-reported opportunities, skills and positive recognition to increase prosocial attachment and bonding (Toumbourou et al., 2019).
The Deakin University Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED) Translation Sciences Stream (www.deakin.edu.au/seed/our-research/translation-sciences) are assisting run a randomized community trial of Communities That Care in Timor Leste (in collaboration with Communities that Care Ltd and the Timor Leste Ministry of Education Researchers). This trial evaluates whether municipal strategy planning can improve primary school enrolments in low income nations.
