Why did internment fail (biased, outdated intelligence)
Nationalists felt it was biased against them. Therefore created a worse relationship between the British army, the people who implemented internment and themselves. (First loyalists were only interned in 1973 two years after internment began!!!)
Internment was also outdated intelligence and arrested the wrong people. All 452 men arrested weren’t a leading member of the PIRA
Why did unionists first support internment
- worked in the past (1920s)
- genuinely thought it would stop violence and future violence
- the inturness could be informants meaning more reliable?
Why were nationalists against internment
Biased against them (discrimination)
What did the SDLP do in protest of internment
Stoped payments of rents and rates for withdrawal from local government in protest
