ROLE OF OT

A

• The role of the OT in paediatric patients is to promote health and
well-being through occupation.
• The primary goal of OT is to help the patients to participate in the
activities of everyday life; helping them to be as independent as
possible by building their functional skills.
• The OT use everyday activities to treat the physical, mental,
developmental, and emotional illness that impact a patient’s ability to
perform daily tasks.
• Early intervention should start as soon as possible to obtain the best
results for the child and his/her family

OT INTERVENTIONS IN PAEDIATRICS

A

In NICU : provide positive social interaction between the mother and
the baby, promote early initiation of KMC, promote minimal handling
and reduction of sensory stimuli by adjusting the light and sound in
NICU.
• Infants and toddlers : breathing and swallowing are the two vital
functions of humans. Feeding disorders occur approximately in 50%
of high risk infants.
• Motor development/ system include posture, muscle tone, reflexes,
movements and activities
Cognitive development assessment is function of the age of the
patient; there are four stages of logical thinking :
• -sensory motor : 0-2 years
• -preoperational : 2-7 years
• -concrete operational : 7-11 years
• -formal operational : 11-12 years
• Play development/ therapy is considered as the primary activity of
the child for the competition of occupational roles in the future life.

Evaluation methods of infant/toddler feeding
disorders

A

Neonatal oral-motor assessment scale( NOMAS)
• Paediatrics feeding behavioral assessment scale (PFBAS)
• Paediatric eating assessment tool (Pedi-EAT)
• Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
• Videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) which is the gold standard for
the diagnostic of orophanrygeal dysphagia.

INTERVENTION OF PT IN PAEDIATRICS

A

• PT help patients in the management of pain, balance, mobility and
motor function
• There is three types of physiotherapy treatment : geriatric,
neurological and musculoskeletal
• The PT uses various methods such as massage, heat therapy,
exercises, electrotherapy, patient education and advice.
• PT also known as physical therapy or kinesiology help to threat
orthopedic, neurological and cardiopulmonary disease condition

INTERVENTION OF THE DIETICIAN IN
PAEDIATRICS

A

• Dieticians are the board-certified food and nutrition expert. They are
highly trained in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
• They are expert in identifying and treating disease-related
malnutrition and in conducting medical nutrition (choice of oral or
enteral feeding, parenteral feeding,…)
• Paediatric dieticians are trained to provide proper nutrition for
children with a wide variety of diagnoses
