Interview Prep Flashcards
(13 cards)
Considering the variety of individuals that you have had to work with, give me an example of some different ways you have had to adapt your interaction style or mood to get the job finished.
Respecting Vacation Time
MOC’ing Procedures(repeatedly)
S - I’ve had to work with some people who for lack of better words desire to be in control when it comes to troubleshooting, spearheading failures, etc. It almost felt as if this person was in competition with me.
T - I had to figure out a way for us to work together in these efforts because I certainly believe that we work better when we put our minds together.
A - So I developed what I call the Akido Mindset. It’s really good book that I read in college that explain how some of the best ways to deal with conflict. Instead of addressing this person head on or maybe rubbing off on them the wrong way, I chose to change my posture. Instead of talking at them, I would talk with them. Rather than complain about the lack of communication, I would overly communicate and allow this person to lead, and had to adjust my position to lead in other ways. Such as Lead in pulling together data, or lead in terms of getting asking, hey where are you short.
R - This approach allowed me to embrace someone Elses style without causing conflict, and ultimately, we were able to work to gather to troubleshoot unplanned events, complete RCI’s, etc. I feel that naturally I do well with leadership, but this was a moment that I had to put my pride and ego to the side and understand that the person in front is not always the leader.
Think about a time when you said something impolite or insensitive to a fellow co-worker. Why did you decide to respond in this manner and what would you have done differently if given the opportunity?
To be honest, I’ve always struggled with this type of question, because I’m very respectful and nice. That’s probably a characteristic most would say about me. If I’m being honest, this might be seen as a strength or weakness, but I tend to hold my tongue instead of firing back at someone. In some cases, I’ve probably been seen as impolite or insensitive by what I didn’t say vs. what I should’ve said…
One thing I could say that I may have done impolite or insensitive( not said) was what I did as an action, not words.
S - One thing that has always annoyed me is the maintenance vs. operations mindset. Because at the end of the day we’re supposed to be on the same team.
T - There was an incident where we Performed a first-time major overhaul on our Furnace Blowers, and the incident ultimately ended up being a rework case because the Oilers were not installed correctly which led to a lack of lubrication. So an individual on the operations team made a comment, made a very rude comment and said maintenance never does anything right, which was so frustrating to hear, because we track the rework metrics and we rarely have rework, but mistakes happen. And this comment was made in the heat of the moment.
A - I didn’t say anything at the time, but I began to take a step back and I learned that making comments like that can sure kill a cross functional relationship. I also began to avoid this individual, which may have been seen as rude or disrespectful, but in my eyes rightfully so.
R - But overall, I think I was wrong in this situation 1) because I avoided the situation or didn’t confront them directly about it when the comment was made. I didn’t speak up for myself.
Tell me about a recent project that you worked on where you were able to gain the trust of the other individuals involved. What did you do to develop this trust?
Options:
First Time Major overhauls for MRU-5510/6510
D-5515 Liner Failure and Resolution
Dewatering Box -5511 (How long for each repair, CSE, Potential bottle necks,)
Installing upgrading LOC Tube Bundles - Decreased temperature
Are there any skills or experiences you’d like to emphasize as they relate to this role?
I understand the importance of cross-functional teams and do a decent job of building relationships with those around me. I think this is important to encourage influential leadership was necessary for any production engineering role.
I enjoy looking at Data and putting together unique ways to look at information.
I do understand a lot of the fundamental
Curiosity and Growth mindset - Always interested in learning and making things/processes better.
I have gain a lot of experience from several outages. Although not big, I’ve had the opportunity to understand how to put these outages together without TA group and got to experience the grit.
Why do you want to be in this role?
I want to broaden my understanding of the overall production process and challenge myself in a new environment. Coming from polyethylene, I’ve gained a solid foundation in downstream operations, but I see a lot of value in learning the upstream side, especially in a unit like LHC where feedstock variability, energy integration, and tight process control are critical. I believe this will make me a more versatile engineer and a stronger asset to the company long term.
What is Cracking?
Cracking is a chemical process where hydrocarbon molecules are broken down into smaller, more useful ones. This is done by high temperature and pressure being introduced to the longer chain of molecules, breaking them down to smaller chains which is more useful. For example, ethane is not as valuable in their large form, but if you “crack” them, you get smaller more usable molecules such as e

- Upgrading Mettarlugy in the Vacuum System.

Explain an instance where you used data to troubleshoot an issue
RF-5511
Looked at Operating Pressure, and Operating Temperature and compared to the spec data provided by the OEM to make sure we’re operating in the parameters set for this rotary feeder and discovered that we’re not. Additionally, the clearances were not set correctly.
