Q

Why do you want to work at McDonalds?

A

I have heard that McDonalds is a good place to work for people looking for their first job because it gives practice for key skills like teamwork, customer service, and time management so for me I think working here would help give me experience and life skills that’ll help me a lot in the future.

Q

How would you handle a difficult customer?

A

With difficult customers I feel that most people aren’t just being difficult for the sake of being difficult, they’re struggling with a problem so they might have gotten the wrong order or maybe they’ve had difficulty using the machines to order or something like that so first I would just listen to what they’re struggling with and explain it to them. But if that didn’t work and they continued to be difficult I feel that there’s power in teamwork so if I wasn’t sure how to handle a particular customer I would try to see if one of my more experienced colleagues would be able to help out and I’d try see how they handle the issue so that I can learn what to do next time that happens.

Q

How do you work in a team?

A

In a team I try to be observant of everyone else and listen to what they have to say so I know how people want me to help, so I’m listening to the jobs they’re telling me to do so I can make sure no job gets left undone, and I try to be observant of others so if someone else needs help I can help them. If there’s someone who feels lost in the team, like they’re not sure what they’re doing or they don’t feel included I try to help them because I think a team is only as strong as its weakest members but if I can help them be a stronger teammate then the team is stronger overall.

Q

Are you available to work on weekends and holidays?

A

Yes, I can do that. On the McHire website it told me to put in the amount of hours I would like to work so I put 40 because that is a typical nine-to-five week but I’m fine with any amount of hours or any days of the week, including holidays.

Q

What would you do if a coworker was not doing their duties?

A

I’d ask them if they’re okay first because I understand that sometimes it can be difficult to work if you’re not sure what you’re doing or if you’re feeling stressed out, and if they’re not sure how to do things maybe I can help them or if they’re stressed maybe I can help them in a way that doesn’t disrupt work. But if it was something that was happening a lot no matter how much I try to help them then I feel I would have to escalate it to the manager and let them handle it.

Q

Why should we hire you?

A

Though I think on paper I might not seem like a good candidate for the job because I don’t have experience and I’m sure you’ve probably had people apply for this job that have tons of experience and might have even worked in McDonalds before, but I can promise I’m someone that has a strong work ethic. I would have liked to start working sooner, but due to some problems I wasn’t able to, but now that I am able to start working I’m determined to catch up on building work experience, customer service skills, and practice working in a team.

Q

Tell me about a time you had to multitask

A

When I did my two weeks of work experience at nursery, every week would have a certain theme so that it would educate the kids about different things. In my first week there the theme was sharks so there were shark-themed activities. I remember one time I was helping one of the other teachers set up an art project for the kids, one by one kids would use blue tissue paper to make a collage of a shark. I was helping call the kids over, but I also had to watch over one child who was a bit of a troublemaker, and since the kids were quite little I had to make sure that any messes they made were cleaned up because we were working with paper and glue and that can get messy quickly.

Q

How do you ensure accuracy in your work?

A

Personally I work well with having To-Do lists, usually I just make a mental To-Do list since it can be inconvenient to keep writing in a notebook and carrying the notebook around with me everywhere I go, but I just remember some basically-worded steps so that it helps me remember everything I need to do and I try check everything twice to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything. If I’m unsure of something I’ll try checking with someone else to see if they notice anything wrong because fresh eyes can sometimes be better at noticing a problem.

Q

What do you know about the McDonald’s menu?

A

I’ve been to McDonalds a lot over the years so I know the most iconic menu items like the BigMac, the McNuggets, the McFlurry, etc. I also check the updated menu when I hear about changes like a new burger being added or something limited edition.

Q

How do you make sure customers get the best service you can offer?

A

To be honest, I just try to be kind and approachable. I know that sounds very simple but I think if people know that you’re kind and understanding they feel more comfortable telling you things so if someone needs help they’ll tell me. I can’t help a customer if I don’t know what’s wrong.

Q

How do you handle stress?

A

I like to vent to people or sometimes I’ll just think about the problem and sort of vent in my own mind. Plus when I vent to people sometimes we can make a joke of it, and then that issue doesn’t feel so stressful now that I’m looking at it from a funny angle.

Q

What would you do if you notice a fellow employee stealing?

A

Stealing is a crime so I’d have to report it but I feel like I’d watch over them to make sure that I definitely saw what I saw. I’d feel bad if I thought I saw someone stealing and reported them but then found out it wasn’t what I thought it was. I would never want anyone to lose their job if they don’t deserve it.

Q

How do you handle criticism?

A

I just see criticism as advice. A few years ago if you’d given me critique on something I’d done, I would have seen that as an insult because I used to see criticism as someone telling me that I was not good enough. So, a few years ago I decided that the only way I could improve was to change my mindset, and see criticism as advice. When someone criticises me they’re not telling me that I’m not good enough, they’re pushing me to be more than good enough.

Q

What would you do if a customer ordered a special dietary requirement meal?

A

I assume that if they’re ordering it to me that means I’m not in the kitchen, I’d be at the counter or drive-thru, so I would make sure to vocalise to those working in the kitchen that the customer has a dietary requirement and tell them what they need to change about the burger. So, if someone ordered a BigMac but they’re allergic to lettuce I’d make sure they know the thing they need to change about the BigMac is that they can’t add shredded lettuce. I’d also do a double check before giving the customer their order because I’d hate to be responsible for someone getting sick or even worse.

Q

What would you do if a customer asked for a refund?

A

I’d see why they want a refund, I know certain people can be unfair and they try to make up problems in an attempt to get free food, so I’d make sure that’s not happening because I don’t want to lose the restaurant money, but if something was genuinely wrong like the customer got the wrong order or something along those lines I’d give the refund after checking it’s okay with either the manager or someone who’s more experience than me that knows the rules.

Q

What is your understanding of health and safety practices?

A

Hands must be clean so it’s important to wash your hands before work and wash your hands after going to the bathroom. Gloves should also be worn when handling people’s food. I know that you’re not supposed to wear acrylic nails when handling food but that’s fine for me because I never wear acrylic nails anyway. And of course food has to be stored at certain temperatures, especially the meat because eating raw or rotten meat is very dangerous.
