Material selection criteria, deterioration and economics
In service condition
Metals
Composed of one or more metallic element and often small amounts of non metallic elements
Metal properties
Strong, stiff, ductile and resistant to fracture. Non elecrolized electrons
Ceramics
Compounds composed of metallic and non metallic elements which are frequently oxides, nitrides or carbides
Ceramic properties
Stiff, strong, hard, insulator and brittle
Polymers
Molecular chain made up of carbon and hydrogen and other non metallic elements which
Polymer properties
Typically low densities, diable, pliable, inert, soften at modest temps, low electric conductivity and non magnetic
Composites
Composed of two or more individual materials which come from metals, ceramics and polymers
Experiential attributes
Appraised meaning given to a material
Tools that help select a material based on experiential qualities.
Technical properties- limitation: no perceived change unless altered stimuli exceeds some fresh hold- JND - just noticeable difference.
Explicit evaluation- consciously formed attitudes that are known to the individual- limitation: less reliable if people do not fully understand views. Can be evaluated uses semantic differential scales. Gathers responses where a material lies between two bipolar adjectives. Can also use flash profiling and nappy tests- participants presented with a number of samples and asked to rank them against some attribute.
Implicit evaluation- subsequent behaviours that result from subconscious processes. Implicit association test- series of timed activities where participants sort stimuli fear appear in the middle of a screen to target categories. Response time can be measured.
