1
Q
What is segmentation?
A
In Drosophila, the transition from cell fate specification to determination is mediated by segmentation genes that divide the early embryo into repeating series of segments along the AP axis.
2
Q
What are zygotic genes?
A
Zygotic genes are genes activated in the fertilised embryo and are transcribe from the zygote’s own DNA.
3
Q
How were segmentation genes identified?
A
Based on Nusslein-Volhard and Wieschaus’ (1980) work in mutant Drosophila with disrupted body plans, segmentation genes were identified as zygotic genes.
